The Olden Days to Online Days: Centring Untapped History's in Online Learning Environments (I/S History)
"Have you ever asked what our history teachers didn’t tell us or what stories our textbooks left out? In this presentation, we will shake up the history classroom by looking at ways we can leverage social media and online resources to explore untapped histories. This will focus on getting students engaged in activism and historical inquiry that fosters critical thinking in online learning environments. Our goal is to encourage teachers to engage students in history that encapsulates diverse perspectives, multiple narratives, and ways to use our understanding of the past to examine the present, and imagine the future.

Guided Reading in Distance Learning (General)
Guided Reading is a powerful instructional strategy that bridges the gap between teacher modelling and student independence (Ontario, 2006). In this session, we will discuss how the four major components of guided reading (introducing the text, supporting effective reading, teaching processing strategies, and discussing/revisiting the text) can be implemented in a distance learning classroom using a blend of synchronous and asynchronous instruction (Denton, Fletcher, et al., 2014).

Enhancing Critical Thinking in Mathematics Through 3 - Act Lessons Asynchronously and Synchronously Using Desmos (Secondary)
3-Act tasks provide engaging, thought-provoking contexts for mathematical inquiry. Act 1 shows the context for the inquiry provides opportunity for students to generate questions. It prompts students to notice and wonder. Act 2 asks students, what additional information would be helpful to know? With the given information, students choose a strategy(s) and calculate before the solution is revealed in Act 3. By "doing the math", participants will develop their own pedagogical content knowledge and increase their efficacy on ways to embed estimating, modelling, inferring, reasoning, proving and other critical thinking skills into their comprehensive math classroom.

Online Tools in Secondary Science
Providing meaningful, engaging science instruction in a distance learning model requires educators to embrace the "5Cs" - confronting challenges with curiosity, creativity and community (Ferlazzo, 2020). In this session, we will discuss how educators can cultivate each of these in their classrooms. The session will focus on practical take-aways that apply in both synchronous and asynchronous online environments.

Developing Feedback-Based Gradeless Assessment Tools (General)
Let's create assessment tools that we can use with our students, based on our Ontario curriculum expectations. We will begin by considering 12 models of gradeless assessment, and then choose one to develop one or more tools to use in our online, blended or F2F classroom. At the end of this session you will leave with customized forms to provide electronic feedback, task checklists, and both single-point and traditional 4-level rubrics to use with your students this year.

Assessment, Feedback, and Evaluation in Math - New Realities
Imagine you are taking math. You have just completed Chapter 5 and now you are facing the Chapter 5 test. Does that feel familiar?
The Ontario Ministry of Education's Growing Success document (2010) outlines what balanced assessment, evaluation, and reporting should look like. However, ten years later, many math teachers continue to struggle with diversifying assessment and evaluation beyond traditional means. The online learning environment of the spring of 2020 made the validity of marks obtained only through "pencil-and-paper" tests seem suspect. How can teachers revisit assessment to make a smoother transition to future online learning? In this workshop we will explore alternate ways of creating a trail of evidence of student learning that can be used in an online, a face-to-face, or a hybrid environment.

Creating Virtual Literature Circles: Community, Courageous Conversations and Student Choice (Grade 7 & 8 Language)
A wide body of research has long shown that classroom literature circles can build community, develop critical thinking, oral communication and listening skills, and deepen understanding of books through ongoing conversations. But, what happens in an online environment? How can teachers build community, facilitate meaningful discussion, and gather authentic assessment data when students are meeting virtually instead of face to face? During this session we will share strategies as to how teachers can foster a sense of community, encourage reflection and rich dialogue on a variety of text forms including fiction and non-fiction books, poetry, graphic novels and others, while providing opportunities for students to creatively demonstrate their knowledge in digital forums on topics that reflect their own interests and passions. A number of formative and summative assessment strategies will conclude the session. Participants will receive an abundance of fresh ideas, activities, and resources that support virtual literature circles and how they can be used to tackle a number of important issues within our society and globally. Join us for discussions about integrating inclusive texts into our classrooms, modernizing the literature circle, embracing perspectives and narratives of those marginalized in society, and providing a forum where our students can share their thoughts, and have their voices heard and acknowledged.
